Angry Frustrated. Code Thrown AGAIN. Help!

Ok so I had a Random missfire code thrown at me about 4 mo. ago.
2 mo. ago I had it again. Cleared the code.
A few days later it came back.
And I also had a missfire on cyl 7 ONE time but never again.

I took it in to the shop and they cleared the codes.
They could NOT get it to replicate the problem.
They kept the car for 4 days hoping they could get it to do it again and hooked it up to diagnostic machine.

They said they could not tell what the problem was unless it told them
specifically which cylinder was miss firing.
Finally they sent me home with it.
A month went buy without the code.

Tonight the code came back.
Random misfire.
I don't know what the hell to do now.

Should I take the car back to the shop?
Some people told me Hot Rod Cams will throw this code sometimes
for some odd reason.

If I take it back what do I need to tell them to check for?
Especially if they cannot get the code to reproduce itself?
This is just driving me nuts now.

Thanks.

What code(s) are you getting? I don't see how a street legal spec cam can cause a misfire.

It comes and then goes away for a good while... then comes back.
WTF could it be and again what all do I need them to check while they are
under my hood?

Anybody?

Some guy on another forum said he had a random missfire code and then a cylinder 7
misfire he cleared them and said all was fine.
Two weeks later he got on the dyno and his freakin #7 follower and lash adjuster broke, dropping a valve!

(I believe he is SCed with a Paxton though)

What in the world would have cause that to happen for him?
That scares the crap out of me.

it just happens. You did work on cams and so there are plenty of things that are no longer in the stock setup under the valve covers. it could be nothing, it could be a plug or coil. it could be a screw not tight on the cam install. anything can happen

Before we go further....
I was wrong on my cylinder misfire.
it was not #7.

It was #8 and it said (pending) like that in parenthesis.
Why would it do that?

Also.... so where do I start?
Is this going to be a long drawn out deal where my car is in the shop
forever and costs a bunch of cash?

Should I start with checking the plugs and maybe just replace the #8 COP?
How hard would it be for the dealership to check the camshaft
position sensor too? (I heard these can cause a random misfire code)

Another thing... does this mean I should not drive it until I find out the problem?
A screw not tight on the cam install could be catastrophic could it not?
Another thing I don't understand is why I am not getting this code thrown at
me constantly if something is wrong. Why is it only happening sometimes?
Why can I go a week or more driving 10 mi. a day and not have the code and then BAM
it comes back?

Well you could always replace the #8 plug and see if the code returns. That will be fairly inexpensive. If it does return then i would swap your #7 COP with the #8 and then see if #7 throws a code. If it does then you know that it is a bad COP.
