Exclamation Two codes thrown..and I need a guru...FAST.

O.k.
As you all know I have the Hot Rod Cams.
I have had a history of hunting idle.
It has never gone away...with three different tuners tried.

Well... I just got a pioneer deck installed.
Spent good money.
Well tonight I am at the park by myself.
I am talking to my girl who just moved to Nebraska and we have both been going through hell with it.

I turn off the car and I talk to her via bluetooth with the engine off.
I get off the phone and start her up.
Notice a little weird startup.

Look down and the check charging system light is there along with the battery light.
I'm thinking I just wore the battery low using the radio and bluetooth right?

WRONG. thats not all...
I have a check engine light... CRAP.. had this before but they were random missfire codes and the tuner solved it last time.

I get home thinking its the same old problem.
But when I get the dang handheld out I get a different code. a P0340 code.

Here's what it says..
P0340:
Camshaft Position (cmp) A ckt (b1 or single sensor)

That is exactly what it said.
What does this mean?

I drove it home. Was that a bad idea? Could I have messed it up?

I was supposed to take it to Dallas on Monday back to the tuner because I was getting a mild engine surge when I was driving sometimes and he thought it was something with the tune he could fix.

What the hell is going on?
Is it safe to drive it to Dallas?
This is a 300 mi trip.

Should I take it straight to Ford?
I dont trust taking it to the shop that installed the cams.
They fired all their staff except the front desk guy a while back and a buddy told me they are still having issues with work.

What is going on with my car and what should I do?
Thanks.

P.S.
Ive had the cams in for about 8 months and this is the first time that cam code has come up.
Also... could they have installed the cams wrong and this code JUST now be coming up?

Also... someone on another forum said my alternator was going out and that for some reason these cars throw a cam code when that happens.

Is this true?

Absolutely true. Sounds like the alternator to me. I've seen it happen exactly as your describing on more than one car.

So a few things. . .

What are you doing in the park by yourself wierdo!

Second, it's not a big deal.

Clear the code.

PUll off the battery terminals and clean the posts and the connectors. Buy a $5 terminal cleaner at the auto parts store.

Put it back together and drive it around.

The reason why the code gets thrown is because of a low voltage situation createsa a strange signal from the camshaft position sensor. The car's brain interprets the signal and throws a code.

Mine has been cmoing on since April. I just recently cleaned my terminals on my battery and it went away. However, not everyone has been so lucky and I feel I am just waiting for the thing to finally die.

Will do thanks all.

Think I'm ok to drive it to Dallas or should I reschedule
just in case the damn thing goes out on me on the
way there or WHILE I'm there?

Remember folks...about a 300 mi. trip there.

And oh yeah... the reason for going was to get my tune adjusted for a slight
rpm surge I am having.
Might not be a good time to do it if the alternator is going bad you think?

Another question people....

I just upgraded my stereo from a Shaker 500 to a Pioneer AVH-3300BT.
It also has the Nav system and bluetooth installed on it.

Do you think the stereo sucked the remaining power from the alternator and I need
a more powerful one? If so what kind of alternator do I need and where do I get it from?
I have'nt a clue on alternators to be honest so I have no idea how much power the stock one has or if I would need new wires too or what.

If anyone can give me input I'd appreciate it.
And if I DO need an upgraded alternator and you know... could you post
what EXACT alternator I should go with as far as power, where to get it... and if I need new wires? Maybe a link or two to the alternator or wires online?

If I DONT need one with more power... I heard something about the stock ones
being bad in these cars... True? If so what Ford part number am I needing for the
better, upgraded one? Thanks!

I had a similar problem with rpm surging on a 94 buick...turned out to be the vibration damper was throwing of the position senor.

You may need a more powerful alternator.

Shaker 1000 mustangs come with amore powerful alternator. I don't know. Sorry.

I can't predict what the 300 mile drive will yield. If you are traveling in decently populated areas I would not worry about it.

Clean up your terminals like Simon stated. Certainly could be a bad alternator. I have read where you just want to replace with a stock unit. Try some searches. I just read about this on another site today.

I agree that particular codes comes up rather easily with charging system issues. With all the add ons on electronics perhaps an upgraded alternator will do perhaps the one from a Shaker 1,000 vehicle. However these are clutch type alternator so they're not always charging while engine is running so you still may have issues.
