Default Header Installation

Hey folks,

I know when installing headers the engine needs to be jacked up off of the motor mounts...

Where do you place the jack -- on the oil pan? Isn't it aluminum? I didn't think it could handle the weight of the vehicle.

Thanks for your help.

The engine needs to be jacked up, not the car.

I used a hyd bottle jack at the rear of engine there are
some flat tabs on block that work great, only have to
raise 1"-2".

And just in case it wasn't clear...you should NOT jack up the motor by the oil pan.

Yes you can, the oil pan can handle the weight of the engine. Just use a phone book or a roll of paper towel to spread the weight. You do realize that when you lower the engine back down with mounts out you're supposed to put a 2x4 on top of the k-member which the oil pan then rests on.

OP, also be sure to loosen (not remove) the mounting nut at the rear of the transmission.

I stand corrected. I've always been told to keep any lifting devices clear of the oil pan, but apparently that's not the case here.

Good tip on using the paper towel roll. I had just used a wood block under the oil pan when I installed my LT's

Thanks. I had read about using a phone book, but didn't have one. The paper towel roll was laying nearby and worked perfectly.

Maybe not with a bottle jack placing all the load
on a small circular spot but SPREAD the load and
