Clunking noob
New guy here..and new to me 2005 Mustang GT.
Got a clunking in the rear (I think) that only happens
on gravel roads or small bumps in pavement. Noticed
the rear stabilizer bushing may be slightly worn. Also,
there is some end play from the hub/axle..<1/8".
Those are the only things I've noticed. The car has
122,000 miles so maybe you folks know of something
that is common for a 2005 GT with that kind of mileage.
Thanks Gary

Thats a pretty clean stang for the mileage you have on her. Any major problem, aside from this clunk, if you don't mind me asking. As for the clunk, is the suspensions stock? If so i'd suggest checking the lca bushings. You find the noise by spraying each rear end suspension part with wd40 one by one until the noise is gone. Process of elimination but i'd definitely check the lca bushing, common problem.
Thanks for the reply.
We replaced tie rods. But that was due to the previous owner hitting a curb.
Other than that and clunking the car seems to be mechanically sound.
Yes...the suspension is stock. I'll try the wd40 thing tomorrow.
Any links, that you know of, on how to check the bushings?
Or do I just try to move the offending parts.
Thanks again.

I work at a local ford dealer as a tech and we see the rear lca/trailing arms go bad a lot. Usually the bushing i'll break away from the arm and the metal i'll be rubbing against the chasis causing it to clunk going over bump at more slow speeds then fast.
I'd start by wd40 that and visually inspect that to see if the bushing has gone bad, theyre pretty easily accessible without jacking the car up.

I checked every bushing...front and rear. And sprayed lube on all.
The only thing looking suspect was the rear sway arm bushings
that are mounted close to the middle of the car and run up to the
unibody. (not the end bushings) I put some bent washers in there to take up some slack and drove itmjust to see if it was any better... Still noisy.
Hopefully its the sway bar bushings. I'll replace them all and see
if that does anything.
thanks again folks for the advise.
