Default Getting the feel for a GT

Hey guys,

I'm looking to get an 05 GT. However I won't be able to test drive it, due to my age. The other cars I have driven are a BMW z4 and a Porsche 911 Cabriolet. Could someone describe where on that scale a gt would fall in terms of how it feels to drive?

Thanks!

If you have a valid driver's license then there is no minimum age to test drive a vehicle. Someone may ride along. If a dealership is telling you there is an age restriction then take your business elsewhere.

In short, its totally different than the cars you have driven. Whether that is bad or good is for you to decide via a test drive.

The 911 will handle like it's on rails compared to the 05 Mustang GT, the Z4 will be a bit stiffer than the GT. Assuming they're top of the line trims, they'll both be just as fast or faster (i.e. 911) than the GT in a straight line too.

The stock suspension on the GT is well below those cars you've driven but a notch or 2 above most other domestic vehicles (if that's saying anything). But the GT's engine has some nice power for a small V8 which, if still running the stock tune, can easily be increased by about 20-25 RWHP with a good CAI and custom tune.

Sorry, CAI? Don't know what that is...

And could you explain a little more in depth about the power? Honestly, I'm not a seasoned driver, so I don't notice the suspension all that much, what I really notice is the sound of the engine, and the acceleration. I love a car with a great exhaust note!

The 05 thru 09 Stangs are as retro to the original Mustang as you can get. The 4.6L in the GT for those years are rated 300 crank HP and average about 265 to the wheels (RWHP). Without installing forced induction (FI) such as a supercharger (SC) or turbo, there's not a lot of additional power to put down; maybe another 60-80 RWHP; until it simply pays to go FI. With that being said, one of the bigger bangs for the buck (again, without going FI) is a Cold Air Intake (CAI) and custom tune. You can get good info on the various combos available on the AmericanMuscle and Brenspeed websites. On the 4.6L, you can expect about 20-25 RWHP gains with the combo. As long as you're not putting your foot into it too much more, fuel mileage remains about unchanged despite the power gains. A good tune also helps exhaust note in some regard.

The stock exhaust systems on these S197's flow very well so you won't gain any measurable power with aftermarket systems but you will improve exhaust note and it can be dramatic over the stock system.

What's your opinion versus the boxster? In terms of being fun to drive, being a head turner, and the engine note?
