In the state of Illinois you have to get your emissions inspected every other year. If you have not CATS can they nail me at that point and not pass the cars. Anyone have this experience
I have lived in Illinois all my life and never had to have a vehicle emissions test done.

Do you have a bigger picture of those wheels on your car? The thumbnail was too small to see.

I enjoyed reading your post but although sorry to hear of your inconvience glad to hear you didn't get a summons. I too have had my dealings with our friends in blue with simular results...although I have a different exhaust set up mine too much louder then normal. I was trying to figure out a way to hook up the front lisence plate w/o drilling holes or permantly mounting the plate. if you come up with something let me know

I haven't been called in for testing in at least 7 years, if there is a law for it, it doesn't seem to affect some people. I spoke to a few friends of mine, they haven't gotten any notice either in years...

BlackB,

Just to clarify I didn't go say "They wouldn't be in business if it was illegal" to the cop. I simply told him that they are legal, and that was all I said. I'm sure they are indeed 'legal' and if I was ever given a summons to go to court ... I could probably swing by SLP and see what kind of paperwork they have to prove that they are legal. I dunno, I'm not worried about it.

If the officer said they are against the law, they probably are against the law locally. Most communities have noise ordinances that prohibit loud exhaust. It has nothing to do with the emissions legality of the exhaust system, it is purely related to the decibal output. I learned this the hard way I did get out of the ticket because the cop didn't show for the court appointment though. An officer friend of mine said she had never heard of anyone writing a ticket on that particular ordinance, she said it's the sort of thing that cops would only bring up if they were really wanting to bring the hammer down on someone (lucky me!) My advice is if you're running around with obnoxiously loud exhaust, ALWAYS soft-pedal it around cops. I've got a Buell (motorcycle) with a Force exhaust that sounds like a friggin' hemi with open headers. Whenever I'm riding by a cop I punch it up into 5th gear even if I'm going 30 and bring her down to just enough throttle to keep it rolling forward

Haha, yes basically what I do now is keep it below 2k RPM before I shift, and try to get to 4th or 5th gear as fast as I can with keeping the sound down. Where I work there are buildings on each side of the road, so that definately increases and echoes the sound... and that's where he noticed me at.
