I have a white 2005 Mustang GT I just purchased last year, and I'm still running on snow tires. I figured I'd buy some new wheels and tires this summer.

I was looking around and really like the XXR 526 in Gold. They are offered in 18x9 +25 and 18x10.5 +20

I know with 285s the rear wheels will stick out past the fenders, but at the moment that isnt my concern, what I'm worried about is the brake clearance. The rears should be ok, but the fronts might be an issue. I've heard that deep dish wheels minimize brake clearance. Does anyone have any experience with these specific wheels? Plenty of the older stangs have them but I have yet to see these wheels on an S197. Hopefully this isnt because they just dont fit.

Also, if they clear the stock GT front brakes, do you think they would clear the 14" Baer BBK (which is sitting in my garage ready to be put on )

Clearing a 14" brake is certainly worth your concern, but don't dismiss the wheels being outside of the fenders soo quickly. Doing so can still possibly rub and cause you damage to tires and/or fenders.

I don't know enough about the S197 brake caliper clearance issues, so I am going to link this thread over to the S197 section as well. This is the proper location for this thread and hopefully someone will chime in with some helpful info.

PS. If they won't clear your brakes... they probably will though, it is just not necessary to have such a large brake. The OEM brakes with some upgrades will stop you 100% as well, just not quite as much ability to address issues of heat. Unless you are planning on open-tracking this car, they will offer you very little benefit beyond appearance.

 

Those are going to stick out A LOT. Personally wouldn't recommend it. I looked into a lot of the XXR wheels. I actually had the XXR 531's on pre-order but got tired of waiting.

 

Thanks Jazzer, I'm not lowered and I'd stay within 1" of the OEM rim+tire diameter so from my (hopefully not flawed?) understanding unless I bottomed out the tires should not make contact with the fender. Correct?
Possibly in the future I'd do some additional rolling with a minor drop.

@ mfergel the rears would stick out 1-1.5" past the fenders, I was thinking I could live with just an inch and no rolling but I plan to do a little more research on how that would look. I also saw the 531s but I felt like it looked wierd without the studs, the VarrStoen ES7s look better IMO, check them out if youre still looking for wheels!

I'm still researching other options I really like but picking wheels is definitely not easy

 

The problem you will have is if you ever "DO" decide to lower you're screwed. Unless you use a severely undersized tire to roll the edges (which looks ghetto) you will be stuck at stock height.

Now, that said, unless you have "BIG" breaks, like Brembos, you shouldn't have a clearance issue if you go with the XXR 526 18x9 Chromium Black 5-114.3/5-120 [+35mm]

I'd suggest going here - http://www.willtheyfit.com/ You can use that to figure out how far out a wheel will stick. I can tell you that a 19x9.5 with a +35 offset and 275/40-19's will go right to the very edge of the wheel well lip. So, you could run the above setup of an xxr 526 18x9 +35 with 265/45-18s all the way around and still be able to lower the car with no problems.

Majority of the cars shown still have the tires tucking behind the fenders, but a fair amount have them past the fenderline and have been dropped. I honestly did not see a single setup that I didn't like (a simultaneous compliment for all the members here). I think I am going to just take the plunge and order them without tires. After a test-fit I'll see if I should return them or order up the tires. Now I am just playing the waiting game since the Gold single-hub wheels are on backorder. Hopefully its sooner rather than later and I can upload pics!
