powder coating
well boys,
i just picked me up a complete powder coating system for $70 w/ 1lb ofpaint and lifetime warranty. im gonna try my hand at this to make a little money on the side, and who know's if i get good enough and do it fast enough i might just quit my job and do this until i can get trained as a mechanic and ASE certified.
i'll take some pics tonight, and this weekend im gonna try to paint some random stuff. IF i start to fell comfortable with my abilities, and some of you feel comfortable with my abilities, i'll put the offer to do some for y'all.
*pics coming later*

Fortunatly, it's not that difficult. But, Man, does it stink up the garage!
Prep exactly the same as you would for paint. Cleanliness is the key.
To get a good shine, slow cooling is important. When it's done, I turn the oven off and crack the door open and let it slowly cool until the oven temp is below 100*. Then I take it out and let if cool on a rack.

Spraying technique is pretty easy. It doesn't take much practice to get a nice even coat. Much easier than a rattle can. It's very important that you get a good contact with the ground wire. I coaver the oven rack with alum foil, and clip the ground to that. If you spray it on and don't like it, you just wash it off in the sink.
I made a simple wooden rack that fits the oven rack. Kinda like a small spray booth. I cut open a large garbage bag to use as a drop cloth. Gently pick up the drop cloth, roll it into a ball, and throw theoverspray in the trash.
The end result for most colors is that it looks exactly like paint. But it's less effort, faster, and much tougher. But there's some intersting specialty coatings avalable now - hammertone, wrinkle, rainbow, sparkly.
My favorite is translucent. Since my car and bike are both red, I like to use translucent red over chrome or polished alum. Stunning.
