Cool Why should I port and polish?

Should I have my heads ported and polished? I have about 100k miles on the Mach, and I'm assuming they haven't been P&Ped before.

Will I really feel a difference and what would the HP/Torque increases be?

Thanks!

Are you planning on having any additional work done like new cams or larger valves? May be a good time to just do it all.

Even if you do nothing else but P&P you will probably see a solid 10% gain in power at the flywheel because you have a 4 valve. Those typcially see a bigger improvement with higher flowing heads than a 2 or 3 valve.

Default Cams, Valves

Honestly, I'm not very familiar with the internals of the engine.

What types of cam and valve upgrades should I perform while I'm in there having it ported and polished?

Thank you!

Not to steal the thread, just had to ask...10% gain??? Our motors make around 325 crank hp. That would equate to a little over 30 hp. Didn't know a P&P job could make that much difference. If so, I'd like to do it as well. Thx.

These heads already flow incredibly well from the factory. Your biggest benefit will be from a quality valve job, as well as the P/P

If you're going to be building a H/C motor, it's definitely in your best interest to forge your bottom end while it's apart. You can't utilize the higher revving capabilities of a radical set of cams if you're bottom end won't take the additional RPM. Personally, I would forge it with a nice piston/rod combo from MMR and do a small bore job on the block while it's getting cleaned up and get the appropriate pistons. Your crank is already forged, assuming you're a 5 speed. This way if you ever want to go F/I down the road or spray, you'll be in your safe limits.

For cams, you can't beat a custom set if you want the most usable power. Good off the shelf grinds are any of the stage 2 and 3 Comp and Crower cams. A good set of customs from say Modular Performance are going to run you about $1200. An off the shelf like the crowers will be around $900, depending on retailer.

Also, getting your intake ported by someone like Roy is going to open up your top end even more. With a big set of cams and heads, you'll see pretty good gains with a ported stocker.
