Sounds like a fuel cut off issue? Have you tried resetting the ecu? Maybe it has a previous tune from a sct or some sort of hand tuner that was never set back to stock..
If the car had a sct tune I doubt it would of passed smog?
Replace the coils u may be plesently surprised. I had 2 bad coils on mine ran like absolute ****. I put MSD packs in but from what I read oem are just as good as any coil.
