39MPG is no problem at all. I got 30MPG highway with a K&N Air filter and a new fuel filter -- on tires with 30K mileage... new tires probably would have gotton me even more MPG. With the ecoboost almost certainly coming the 39MPG requirements and technology will easily get the v6 model 39MPG by 2016. Also there are private people who have made v8's with plenty of power yet good MPG... I'm sure Ford is smart enough to make a really efficient V8 engine within 7-8 years.

Also it's not like the Mustang will just cease production. You CAN still buy a car with LOW MPG, they are not making that illegal. You will just have to pay a Gas Guzzler Tax on the vehicle. I think the new Challenger even has a Gas Guzzler Tax on it.

With that said I do think that 39MPG is asking a little much. Is the 39MPG Highway, City, or the average the vehicle gets?

do you people understand that the new requirements are for a companies OVERALL line up of cars?
i don't think you do. you sound like chickens ruining around with your heads cut off
going "oh noes! obama is teh communist pushing green cars on us! the mustang is dead!"

all ford needs is a few high MPG cars and they can leave the mustang at 30mpg or whatever they feel like.

ITS AN AVERAGE!

ex:
Fusion Hybrid=50mpg
Mustang GT=30mpg

30+50=80

80/2=40
there. thats a 40mpg FLEET AVERAGE.

A point worth mentioning that I didn't hear is that the EPA window sticker rating your fuel economy is completely different than the CAFE mpg rating.

The EPA window sticker uses more "real world driving" techniques to give a lower fuel mileage rating.

CAFE mpg ratings are typically higher.

The example given by Edmunds.com is:
"By the same token, today's 27.5 mpg CAFE standard for passenger cars equates to about 21 miles per gallon on an EPA window sticker."

Wow I had no idea that there were such differences between CAFE and EPA. While it's confusing and a bit misleading, I guess it makes everyone happy. The automakers don't need to make radical changes, and the individuals and groups pushing for higher mpgs feel like they are getting it.

Yeah, you all need to take a breather and really think about the situation. What's really going to kill the high gas-mileage power cars is not going to be the president, but it'll be the consumer not buying them and thus the car industry slowing cutting down on their output. Changing times, my friends.

I went to Primm & Vegas last weekend I put the stock tune back on the car for the trip and got 32.26 mpg on the way out there. On the way back I got 29.67. This was going between 70 and 90 mph both there and back.
