Default Woman Hit With $47,000 Bill After Rental Mustang Stolen

Here's a nice little nightmare scenario: You splurge on a convertible Mustang GT at the Enterprise lot instead of a miserable Corolla or whatever, only for the car to get stolen after you returned it, leaving you with a staggering $47,000 bill.

Story was updated, they let her off the hook. Didn't go in to a ton of detail as to why but they did.

Of course they did. I don't know how Enterprise got it in their head that their case would fly? This is like blockbuster saying, "well after you dropped off your rental someone reached over the counter and took the movie out of the drop-off slot bin, so it's your fault." If drop-off procedures were followed then the car was NOT in her possession.

Not backing Enterprise on this but think about it for a minute.

Rent a car, go get spare keys made, go back a couple days later and drop the keys in the drop box and drive away with the car, play shocked and surprised when the rental company calls and says they just have keys but no car.

I know when I rented a moving truck they had an after hours drop box, just park the truck and toss the keys in the slot.

I believe it was similar when we rented a car in Florida last year, park it, toss the keys in the slot and off we went.

Bad situation all 'round, I know I'd hate to have to deal with that. Makes you wonder if they have security cams set up and how the car was stolen because you can't just hotwire a car these days with the chip keys and such, you'd almost have to tow it or load it on a flatbed to steal it.

Think again...

The PATS system prevents you from making a "spare set of keys" to
a vehicle you do not already have 2 sets of keys to.
Rental companies do not give you two sets of keys for a rental...

Some do- When I did a roadtrip this past summer, Enterprise gave me 2 sets of keys. But in their genius, both keys were on 1 of those irremovable key rings.

My brother has a Enterprise rental "13" Dodge Avenger and he has both sets of keys. I thought that was odd that Enterprise gave him 2 keys??

I have had multiple rentals where 2 sets were on the same ring. Regardless of the outcome, just can't imagine getting the intial call... Yeah you owe us 47k!

Rental keys for rental fleets are different
from OEM dealership bought vehicle private ownership keys...
