PATS
I've worked for Ford for just over 20 years, I'm well aware of how the PATs system works.

Think about this for a minute, any Ford tech could bring home the hand held tool that allows programming of keys and many locksmiths out there have also invested in the technology.

If there's one thing we should all know by now is that no technology is perfect or hack proof, all a thief would have to do is to gain access to the programmer and they're good to go and as others have mentioned it's not uncommon to be given two keys for a rental if you expect to have two different people driving the car.

Avoid car rentals at all costs if it's possible.

When I was looking to rent a car for my daughter I was told if you don't buy their insurance, which is almost as much as the actual rental and it's damaged, your insurance has to pay the bill, along with rental fees for each day the car is out of commission.

I believe in paying for extra insurance when it's warranted, and extended warranties if I think it's warranted.

But I will not be taken advantage of by loan sharking car rental companies. When I found out what they wanted for insurance I them told no thanks. It was seriously expensive.
