RE: 8 speed NOS Turbo GTO ???
Its a 4 speed automatic with an external lock up converter that he can engage in any gear.
honestly, you would not want to race by going thru the gears like he did. The external lockup converter really only is an advantage because he can run a very steep rear gear ratio, and use the converter to keep the RPM's low at highway speeds.

I still dont understand the gears. I guess it's just me. Why would you want an overdrive for every gear? If you wanted to keep rpm's low at highway speeds then that is what your overdrive gear is for. So why would you need a 1st with overdrive?

You can turn the converter on in any gear, and it will reduce your RPM.
Its not really worthwhile from a shifting thru it point. It isn't a "8 speed". Its just a 4 speed with basically an additional gear you can activate at any point.
My brother has one of these on a 700R4 in his pickup truck. his is only good for like 400 RPM, but its still fairly significant in top gear.
