I would like to see an open sight or even scoped .308 in an assault rifle setup hit someone in a combat situation at 800 yards....

Sounds like you guys need to be taking your own ammo over there though, AP for personel?

I can say one thing though.. you definatly don't want to be standing within say 400 yards of me, even with open sights, and my AR-15 in .223

Love the AR15 man, great gun. Shoots 7.62mm rounds right?

No, the AR-15 fires .223. However, there is the AR-10 or the variants thereof that do fire .308. Those are not issued to soldiers by the way. (Unless you're a scout. And then, MAYBE.)

The M-4/M-16 series rifle has all kinds of barrels out there. 308, 223, 688you just got to look out there. The military channel did a show on the replacement for the M-4.Then again it's hard to find more ammo if you brought something other than the 223, because everbody out there uses the 223. If firing m4 then only use m855 green tip and m856 orange tip. Otherwise the effectiveness goes downhill at around 70-75 meters using the m193 no color and m196 red tip.

Size Matters. Big bore all the way.
Damn skippy! And that is why I love shooting the .50cal on my ship! Luckily it's a mounted gun, so I don't feel the full force of the recoil. I also love shooting the M240A. That's a fun little gun. It's a7.62mm machine gunclosely relatedto the M60, but I'm sure most of you knew that already.

My personal preference is for the M231 PFW. It mounts in the back of a bradley IFV. Look it up, it's pretty cool.
