First car
Welcome to the forums! Glad your first car is a stang... soon you shall be a full blown addict. *evil laugh*
She looks somewhat neglected, but definately worth it to restore! She's going to be a beauty soon enough.
As for your question, 64.5 to 65s are all identical. The door codes are even the same! But when you decode it you will be able to find out WHEN your car was built, and thus what year it officially is. a good site for this is:

gl to you!

I can't find the code, but I found another site with lists of parts exclusive to 64.5s.
Apparently, this car has been worked on a bit, because some of the parts match the 64.5, and some are exclusive to 65s. Odd. Oh well. It's a Mustang, and it's mine, so life is good.

Welcome to Mustang Forums 65stang289!
Come on over to the classic section, there is a ton of information there for you to check out. For a thousand bucks you have a great start to an extremly fun first car, plus you get the bonus of working with your dad and learning from him! It doesn't get much better than that!
To answer your question about differences between a 1964 1/2 and 1965, yes, there are some differences, but most are very minor. Here are a couple of links that explain them:

Best way to find out the year is to run the VIN #, There is a plate on your driver side dash under the front window with the #, If it is not there look in the door jam. If you get this # it will tell you when the car was built sold and what options it came stock with. OOOO nice car I think you and your Dad will have alot of fun with it
Neil, the VIN # has apparently been replaced by a newer code. At the top it says "Replacement Identification Number", and it does not match the coding specified on www.vintage-mustang.com. Doesn't look like it could be more than 5 years old either, so I'm not going to bother.
Thanks Troy, the pictures helped quite a lot. Some of it, like the red carpet pad and gas cap with no retaining line and 5 slots points to 64.5, but most of the evidence points towards late 65, like the shifter bevel with red arrows, so that's what I'm going with.
Thank you for your help, guys. I'll be joining you in the Classic Mustangs section when I know enough about the things to post.
