There really is no such thing as a "numbers matching" 1965 Mustang. Ford didn't start stamping identification numbers on motors and drive train parts until a couple years later. If you do a search here for "numbers matching" you'll find more information.

Good luck!

Thats not exactly true! Ford date coded most all of its parts! Look for date code that begin with C5. The C stands for dates in the 60's, D stands for dates in the 70's, hence C5 = '65..... C6= '66.... If you find a part on your '65 with a date code of D7 you know you have a problem! D7='77. You may find parts prior to '65 (C4, C3 )but you will not see dates later than the production year of the vehicle it is on!

Dave-

It is true that some Ford part numbers include a dating system and that they are broken out by decade.

However, even with that information it is still impossible to tell if the motor, transmission or rear end that are currently installed in the car are the original parts that were installed at the factory.

Thanks for the info though.

Yes, there is no way to tell for sure which part from 1965 come with the car originally, but when the highest level of restorations are being done they concider this type of date coding to be the most correct
