well first off, nobody here is an expert, and i would always get many opinionsor a professional opinion. i wouldnt base something as important as my car on what people here say. but, 5.0's have been around since they made boss 302's i believe and i knowthey stopped in 1995. so you can get the second newest model with one if you would like. also, the most common, the fox body, is cheap, easy to find, and not hard to find mods for at all. the mustang 2 (not at all reccomended) also sported the 5.0.

if you want to go fast cheap and looking decent an 87-93 gt hatchback would be a good candidate.

I own a '96 GT, 4.6 liter, and I love it. As Jugador said, the fox bodies are cheaper and easier to come by though. Either way, 5.0 or 4.6, you won't be disappointed with either one. The aftermarket is growing fast for the 4.6, and right now there are several options for aftermarket heads (though most are based on factory heads, just improved), intakes, a lot of exhaust options, as well as just about everything else you can get for a 5.0. Parts are a little steeper for a 4.6. If you want a fast and cheap way to get into the Mustang world, look for a fox body, EFI years between 1986-1993. You can pick up a really nice fox for between $5k - $7k, or less if you don't mind a little work. Bottom line, a well built 5.0 Mustang can whip just about anything on the street. Good luck!

mustang 2 isnt reccomended because its ugly for one, and if im not mistaken they detuned cars of its era so badly. not to mention fuel injection is probably better and those are carbed from back them.

i would recomend the 1989 to 1993 fox body mustang 5.0 5speed. the foxes before 89 are speed density cars where as the 89 up cars are mass air cars and you can modify them more. or you could do a mass air conversion. the notchbacks are the best in my opinon lightest and the stiffest.
