RE: Newbie questions
modular is what the 4.6L motors are called. Ford moved from the pushrod 5.0 to the Modular OHC 4.6 in 1996. The modular 4.6 comes in 2valve (96-04 GT), 3valve (05+), and 4V (96-04 Cobra,03-04 Mach 1)

RE: Newbie questions
They were neck and neck until 99 when ford added the PI heads to the 4.6. The 4.6s are called Modular because of the way they are built. They are designed to make it easy for a ford technician to work on them. Such as the heads for example. The old 5.0 liter heads had to be dissasembled to get them off. The rocker arms, pushrods, and not to mention the intake was a lot harder and time consuming to get off. The 4.6 head can be taken off with the cams, rockers and tappet still in the head so it's one big piece. They were supposed to make things easier and quicker. The problem with that idea though is the fact that they are a lot wider than the old 5.0s which left no room to work on them making them actually harder to work on in many ways.
