Default my stang

I have a 86 gt and it has 176000 miles on it. I would like to increase power without hurting my engine and was wondering if anyone had some suggestions. I fear trying to modifiy and it not work. Also if anyone knows what the car can handle or reconize in power, such as the computer, engine, transmisson and rear diff?
