2013 MPG Question

2013 MPG Question
I know that a Mustang is not a car one buys for the best fuel economy. But it was a factor in my decision. My 2013 V6 with Automatic has an EPA rating of 19-31, and I assumed that my actual MPG would be lower, as it has been with other cars I bought. (Most notable a Prius, which has an EPA rating of 50-60 and actually gets 35-40)
But I get better than EPA with my Mustang. If I drive it carefully (not like a mustang) I'm getting 24 around suburbia, and 32 on the highway at 55MPH.
Now of course a Mustang driven for fun, like a mustang should, gets lower gas mileage. But I don't do that everyday.
So my question... when driving around town, I can just keep the Automatic in D or use sport shift. I'm curious if using the sport shift to start in 2nd gear would improve MPG? One one hand the acceleration is slower, but on the other hand there is probably more slip from the torque converter.

Try the tech section, but I think:
Leave it in drive. I don't see how starting in second would be better. As in my manual, starting in second I need to give more accelerator thus dumping more fuel. Not sure if it's the same with an auto.

Probably should just leave it in D and be easy on takeoffs.
I actually get around 24 MPG city on my 2010 4.0 but I use 89 non-ethanol fuel as well (only mid grade pure gas here :/ ) Highway is only around 28 though but I'm not very easy on my cars.

Just Baby the throttle and don't be as aggressive on takeoffs. Taking off in 2nd with an auto is pointless. Just put it in D. I have a manual and the only time i take off in 2nd is when I'm going downhill. Gas mileage increase is negligible.
