New from Kentucky
Hello all. I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Nick and I live in Western Kentucky. For the last few months I've been watching for 1964-1967 mustangs as a gift. Here's a bit of my story. My girlfriend of the last 5 years is in LOVE with those particular Mustangs. We've talked endlesly about how she would love to have one to restore and work on and drive. Well, I'm gettin real close to proposing. (I know, about time right) Anyway I thought the way I would try to do it is first...find a decent Mustang and buy it, second place the ring in the glovebox and as she's super excited about the musting she finds the ring. Thats the plan anyway. I'm selling my boat to fund this little dream. Boat hasn't sold yet though so The dream is on hold. I have some people looking at it this week so fingers crossed.
Now on to my questions. Prices here in KY for mustangs are all over the place. I've seen extremely rusted ones missing pieces and parts, sometimes including engine and transmission range from 3 to 7000. Others look very decent and can range from 5k to 20k. I know she likes the idea of a manual transmission...and honestly I'm not sure she's aware that their are Inline 6's, 289's etc. So I dont know that the motor will matter too much. But it might to me. I've read the specs but I don't really know how to compare. For instance I've got a 1979 Chevy truck with a 350. It's slow as christmas but very powerful. I've got a 6 cylinder car thats quick as a whip. So I'm just not sure. So I'll give you the specs I know so far of some that I'm comparing and would like your thoughts.
I'm checking out a 1966, inline 6cyl automatic transmission for $6500 that runs great. It has beautiful interior and has had a lot of restoration already done. There is still some to do but the car is probably 80% there including fixing a lot of rust etc. However, it doesn't have AC, a radio, power steering or power breaks.
Then there s a 1965, 289 manual 3 speed. With ac, radio etc. It's interior is a bit rougher, dashpad is cracked, carpet is pretty rough and paint is pretty rough, but it runs pretty good too. It's also $6500
So my question, is the 289 significantly more powerful than the 6? Is it that much more fun to drive? I know theres about an 80hp difference, but in real world driving, torque etc, is it worth spending about the same money to buy them when one is gonna take more money to fix up but has the 8cyl?
I know it's a tough question to answer, but I just don't know. They're both about an hour and a half drive from me, and honestly the first car I listed looks much better. below are some pics...

welcome
Car 1 definitely looks like it's in much better condition and won't need much...you have to decide if the 289 is worth it, because you're going to be spending more money updating the car's condition
