Default Ignition Module Failure

Just replaced the ignition module on my 92 convertible for the first time. No warning, it just stopped at the busiest intersection in my town. The only sign of something being wrong was the tach started dancing at idle a few minutes before it knocked off, but the car did not seem to be miss firing. I figured the tach was starting to fail or something to do with the tach. Question, was this a sign the module was getting ready to fail? I see where Ford had some issues with this module because of heat and location, I guess I am lucky mine lasted 27 years.

This would be the TFI Module, mounted on the distributor? 5.0 HO engine?

It was removed from the distributor in 1994, located mounted on a heat sink, 1995 was the last time, 5.0 was discontinued after that, '96 had 4.6, no distributor.

Yep, mounts on the side of the distributor. Ford might have used it one more year there and then moved it to the firewall.

Newer modules sold by Ford Parts were said to be re-designed to handle higher temps. for long periods. As long as yours lasted (if original), it seems a moot point. Aftermarket parts maybe another story. Really no point for you to mess further, but if you wanted to, you could get a '94-'95 distributor and remote-mount heat sink; the TFI is the same, fits either distrib. or sink, and run wiring appropriately.

When I was in the business of doing EFI installs on older cars and trucks, I used brand new 5.0 HO Mustang engines from Ford Motorsports, bought 6 of them. I had to use the remote-mount TFIs.

You can also buy a kit to relocate it yourself. Just google ford tfi module relocation kit.
