Question Battery gauge problem

Just installed a new alternator for my 2005 mustang GT. The alternator is putting out 14.2 at the battery. Battery is also fairly new. Here is the problem. When the car is sitting with no key on the battery gauge is all the way to the right (fully charging status). When the key is turn on and no engine on the gauge stays all the way to the right. When you start the engine and the alternator is putting out power the gauge goes all the way to the top of the gauge (12 O Clock). It all most seems like some wire is reversed or maybe not getting ground. What wire color in back of the alternator is responsible for the gauge setting. Everything seems to be plugged in at the back of the alternator. Any ideas would be helpful
