94-98 GT Convertible seat extenders
After spending the last 2 months trying to get my seat extenders installed and working on my 96 GT Vert I have finally succeeded. It was NOT EASY and certainly totally different experience than the seat extender manufacturer product descriptions online and in the packaging describe (I bought from CJ Pony) If you tall (Im 6'5") I wanted to try to help anyone else who needs the added 3 inches in legroom for their Mustang and I hear the same issues and solutions apply to other generations of Mustang Convertibles.
Problem. The seat extenders sold for Mustangs say that they work equally well in Coupes and Convertibles. In fact they DO NOT work on SN95 convertibles because the convertible seat belt system for front passengers differs to the Coupe version, and the seat belt floor base mounting unit with rewind system blocks the seat from moving any further back from stock no matter that the track is 3 inches longer.
I found that after paying a pro for the installation of the seat extenders, LOL
The solution is relatively simple but no where online and involves buying a MINT or like new version of both a coupe and a convertible seat belt mechanism for at least the Drivers side and using a professional seatbelt repair shop to join the bottom of the Coupe Seat belt system and latch, to the top rewind mechanism from a Convertible. It means the seat belt from the coupe needs to be in excellent condition to be rewound into the Convertible top mechanism to work well in retract mode and be safe. The Coupe floor attachment does not block the path of the seat on extenders, the convertible top rewind mechansim handles keeping the right tension.
Im now able to stretch out and relax for long trips - very comfortable and much easier to work the clutch.
One more tip. If you want to do this and also want to get a rear seat windscreen you need to order the version that work with a lightbar, not the normal one. The normal one will block your seat at firsthest back positions.
