Default Basic Autocross info. New looking to start.

I have never done autocross but I want to go give it a shot once the tracks open up around here and the weather warms up. Where do i have to go to register? What do I need to do before my first event? I was wondering if anyone can help me as far as what class I should be in? Just basically want to know what I need to do so I can be ready, and show up in the spring and run without any paperwork issues.

Welcome Shaun

Take a look back at the last number of threads in this section. There are a posts on the basics of what to expect and prepare your car for the day. The single biggest thing I can recommend, is you focus on having a good time! Don't try to keep up with anyone else reguardless of the type of car he/she drives. The second one is focus on you as a driver. The "driver-mod" is the single most important item to make you fast through the course.

Contact the club that you plan to meet and they will have a rules list and recommended items needed for the day.

Jazzer

I know the local club around here recommends a first timer to come early and try and help with setup. So you could possibly get some pointers from them and get to know them.

So basically I just have to fill out the preregistration form and buy a weekend pass? And bring a helmet? I have read through posts here before about how to perform on your first day I was mainly curious what I actually had to do as far as registration and stuff before the event to make sure I was allowed to race and have everything done properly lol. Thanks for the tips and links though guys.

Autox'g is a great way to know your car w/ out doing a lot of damage. It's about a minute of high intensity. Looking at the mods on your car, I think you'll at least be in what is know as STX class. This is the street touring class after stock for American V8 cars. Street modifed is next for you and you're dangerously close to that class. It takes stupid money to be competitive in that class. Look here, http://www.scca.com/contentpage.aspx?content=61, for everything you want to know about autocross and car classing assuming the club you'll run w/ follows the SCCA classing. I'm in a local club here in NC and we follow their classing rules.

What you need right now is seat time. Sliding the car, or even drifting is fun, done it myself, but it scrubs off time. I've been in events where .05 seconds covered 1-4th place. Very intense day.

The club you run w/ should also allow you to run in a novice class. You run in the novice group, but use the STX PAX to find your final result time for your runs against the other NOV drivers. I DO advise you run on street tires for your first year. Don't spend the money on r-comps, they mask bad mistakes. Listen to your streets when they whine when you push them to hard.

I'd also talk to other autox'ers that are running your model of mustang. They all handle a little differently and all tend to push in hard turns. If you are braking into a hard turn (trail braking), the car will push badly. If you can brake early and apply throttle when you are in the turn, then you can have over steer, which is great fun.

Hit some of the local forums for the club you want to join and read what they have to say. After a few years, you'll make your own decisions on what works best for your car.

Have fun and stay NOV for a year then go open class and get pushed by the other drivers. This can be a very frustrating sport and also very rewarding when you do everything right and beat out the 4 or 5 drivers in your class. Bragging rights is everything
