Default intercooler setup

i have a 3" intercooler piping kit already to go, but i need the intercooler. Does the inlet/outlet size of the cooler have to match the piping or can it be slightly smaller so that if fits inside of the tubing?

i suppose it really shouldn't matter, its not going to NOT work.. but the more restriction you have, the less efficiency you'll get. you'll produce less boost and power than with an intercooler that's properly sized. but if thats all you can find, its WAY better than nothing.
