4.10 gears
Not sure if I'm in the right place, but everyone in this particular forum seems to know a sh!tload about cars, so here goes...
I have to bring my car in to the dealer cuz the steering wheel vibrates ridiculously at speeds >50mph (and it's under warranty). So, I figured I'd ask for a quote on getting 4.10 gears installed while it's there. The gear 'kit' (Ford Racing) runs $725. Then the car evidently needs a programmer (which runs about $500) + CAI (which I don't understand) because of the speedometer. I've already got a CAI, so the bottom line for the whole thing is $1300 + Tax!! (If I didn't have a CAI already, the cost would be about $1900)
Seems like I've heard of people on the forums getting this done for half the price. I don't mind paying the price if it's fair, but this sounds like bullsh!t to me.
The only bonus of having this done at the dealer is that work should be warrantied, and, I've heard/read plenty of stories about guys getting crappy jobs with the gear install.
Any input is greatly appreciated.

Hey,
I have 3.90 gears in my car. I dont remember how much the gears cost, but i know there is no reason for the CAI...
with the 3.90s its an odd gear apparently to put in a mustang, most people do 4.10s, and when you put in a different rear gear, (i believe this is how this works) they put in a gear(somewhere) that redoes the ratio so that it still reads the mph correctly, with the 3.90s they dont have a gear that matches exactly so they put in one that is close. As a result my speedometer consistently read about 5-7 mph faster than i was actually moving. got some bigger wheels and tires and now it reads about 3mph faster... atleast it doesnt read slower.
the CAI wouldnt affect that at all, i have no idea where that came from, and a tune isnt really needed with just a CAI... and besides you already have a CAI that youve been driving with so... it should just cost the gears, which i dont know if theyre covered under warranty...
It helps to have a good place put your car together too, my car had some twisted parts that came from the factory that the previous owner never fixed, and the shop straightened that all out for me, so having people that know what is going on is a good thing :-)
hope this helps.
one other thing, when dynoing the car, the dynos are set up for a specific rear gear, (like 3.33 at mine or so) and the dynos get calibrated to that gear. when you put the gear in it makes it easier for the motor to spin, which will read as less HP on the dyno, so you may have to take that into consideration.
I believe all that is correct. If im worng im sure someone will correct me.

Don't know what rear end you've got....but check here: http://www.americanmuscle.com/mustang-gear-kits.html If you just want gears and not a kit, just search that site. They've got some good prices and I ordered something from them and their shipping is fast. You don't necessarily need a programmer/tuner, unless you want one....you can get one of those with the higher packages, and the price is a pretty good deal too. CAI will do absolutely nothing for your gears, not necessary.
I was thinking of getting a Brenspeed tune, then having the dealership install the gears. The guy said they could do it no problem but a huge chunk of my warranty would be voided by not using a Ford programmer.
I'm not sure if the Ford programmer could be used for anything else. Anyone know?

I realize this is a little late, I would go to another dealership if you haven't done anything yet.
That sounds like one of the Ford Racing Packages they are trying to sell you...minus the short headers and short shifter

if you want to just wait and get a tuner later this package comes with a speedometer recalibrater...
you can also find on by itself on the same site for 99.99.
good luck.
