i'm not too familiar on turbos BUT go look onhellion's website, i know a few guys that swear buy them. but some1 mentioned that u dont wanna go cheap, and they r right. an F/I system is not something u wanna jerry rig. especialy since u r keeping stock shortblock, u r only looking at around 10 psi, so i dont even kno if u can reach the numbers u r talking about w/o scattering your internals...so dont reach for the sky when your budget cant even get u off the ground. play it safe.
There's nothing wrong with going the junkyard/diy route. I've built quite a few turbo & supercharger kits using mostly junkyard parts & none have broke down yet. I haven't spent over $1500 so far & I got down in the 12's on street tires n/a, no bottle. Some people get into the 10's going the junkyard route & still have a reliable car.

well, there is a difference between being cheap (ebay turbo) and getting a tried and true turbo off a car that came with it. im not worried about scattering my internals forged is a wonderful thing, the block will split before my internals go. my budget is very low, but my fab skills and rebuilding skill are pretty good. im not the best, but im good.

belooks like some of the SR20 cars may have turbo's like the T28 by garett....so which of the turbo's would better for my application the TC turbo or the T28?
I helped a buddy of mine swap a sr20 into a s14 (240sx) and that stock turbo is wayyy too small for a v8.
x2 on the turbos. the ford 2.3 is the best option for getting them. They're sized pretty well perfect & come on turbocoupes, svo's, mercury capri rs turbo's, & merkur xr4ti's. They're the most common turbo that's sized good for what you're wanting.

As for the power... I wouldn't just rely on the turbo's alone. I'd look into getting an explorer intake or perhaps a typhoon intake from ebay & touching it up a bit, & I'd either do some porting on the stock heads or try to find some gt40's from the junkyard. You'll probably need a pretty decent cam too, but they're not that expensive.

they're too small. If you find one of the vnt turbos on one though I'd highly recommend buying it & reselling. People will pay big bux for them. It's just a shame they're too small for the 5.0.

There are a couple that will work if you can't find the others, but chances of you finding one of the cars in real life letalone the junkyard are slim to none.

rebuild kits are very cheap for them & rebuilding a t3 is a cake job. The hardest thing is getting the snap rings out of the center housing which is extremely easy.

I've had no experience with rebuilding ball bearing turbos from what a few shops have told me, you don't want to touch them. As far as performance goes I doubt anyone's going to regret going with a fluid bearing turbo, alot of the people producing over 1000hp are still using fluid bearing turbos.

Depends on if it's damaged or not. Every used turbo i've ever used or rebuilt for a friend were never damaged badly enough to require new impeller/turbine/center housing type things.

The rebuilds I generally do consist of replacing the 4 piece seal, snap rings, turbine shaft bearings, thrust bearing, seal ring, & the oring for the compressor housing. That will run you about $50. You can get a near full rebuild kit for around $80.

I always get my rebuild kits from gpopshop. They're pretty helpful. I've sent a couple turbine shafts off to them to have them sized for bearings, the only thing they ask is to include $ to ship it back, but they have no problem sizing it to get the bearings fit perfectly.
