Default Tail Pipe Replacement Question

Hey Everyone-
Ive had my 2001 gt for a couple years now and the driver side tailpipe rotted out right at the muffler. When I got under the car, I realized that it had an edelbrock exhaust system on it when i bought it. The rest of the system is perfectly fine, now my question is, how do I attach a Stock Tail pipe( 2.25 in) to the edelbrock muffler ( 2.5 in)? Do I have to weld it or is there a way to attach it without welding? Thanks Josh

Sounds like there is a good chance the muffler is going to be rusting at the outlet as well it that is where the pipe is rotted out. Stock pipes are 2.25, not 2.5 right? So you will have to get an adapter pipe that is 2.5" O.D. on one side and 2.25" I.D. on the other. The adapter may actually help extend the usability of the muffler by adding metal if it has started to rust. You can clamp it up but welding is better.

If you can bring the piece of exhaust to practically any shop they should be able to expand the end a little bit so it is a nice fit. Should only take a couple minutes on a hydraulic exhaust bender/expander.

Possibly, worth asking a pro for sure. The factory stainless isn't very forgiving and can split when stretched. You'd want to bring both the pipe and muffler so it can be test fitted. If you don't bring in the car be sure that the pipe is actually long enough to reach into the inlet as aftermarket mufflers aren't always the same length as the factory muffler.
