Default Blower Numbers....

Hey, I was just wondering what exactally the blower numbers mean. Ex: WHen you look at a roots stytle blower and they say its a 8-71 or a 6-71 bla bla bla. What exactally does that mean? Any answers are appreciated.

Heres a link to the website that I was looking at when I got confused.

These were originally used on GM's Detroit Diesel engines. Detroit Diesel use a modular system on there engines, which use the basic numbering system of listing the number of cylinders and the cubic inches per cylinder. Samples, 3-53, 6-53, 6-71, 8-71, 12-92, etc. The 8-71 blowers design comes from the 8-71 series Detroit Diesel engines. The Detroit Diesel is the only diesel engine in the world of it's type, being a hybrid of 2 cycle and 4 cycle design mixed. They use 2 cycle style ports in the cylinder walls on the intake, and 4 cycle type exhaust valves in the heads, which require these blowers to get complete scavenging of the cylinders. If added power is needed, they use turbochargers added to them. A engine model 8V71T would be a 8 cylinder with 71 CI per cylinder, with a turbo mounted.

The number difference basicly refers to the size of the blower. An 8-71 is slightly bigger than a 6-71, and so on.
