Dont use salt as ballast. The thought is just too nasty if those bags ever opened or leaked.

eh its fine. they are sealed in plastic bags. my old truck i had i used them, they were exposded to the winter weather and never leaked...i think my truck will be fine. In the winter i dont put anything in my trunk anyway. so nothing can really break them open...well unless someone hits me from the rear...in that case i think broken salt bags wouldn't really mean ****. lol

Default RE: Snow driving

I decided last week to go and test drive an 07 Mustang GT when there was snow on the ground to see how it would do. It had the stock 18's, 3.55 gears and a manual tranny and did great in the snow. It actually does better in the snow than my supercrew 05 F150 that has a 200lbs shell on it and 300 pounds of gear in the bed. I will only put my truck into 4 wheel drive if there's no way I get get it going or I need to pull someone out of a snow bank. I don't like to tear up my drivetrain driving in 4 wheel drive on hard ground. Like was said above, the new stang seems to do great in the snow. Now I just need to work on the financing a bit and I should be able bring home a new GT in the next couple of months.

The first rear wheel drive car I had to drive everyday in the snow was a 69 T-bird with a 429 big block and an open dif. While that was great when the roads were dry, it was a good learning challenge/experience in the winter since I live in a very hilly area.

Thanks for the replys everyone.

I live in Chicago and decided not to drive my 06 mustang gt till the city plows most of the snow. I care too much for my vehicle so I decided not to drive it while its snowing. I took the bus saved money and drive it only when the streets are some what clean. You may want to do the same. Public transportation in chicago is not that bad--it man be in other cities though, I don't know.

I live in Northern Ohio, drove my car thru last years winter. It really wasnt that bad but, a few times I had some issues with ice and starting in the snow, you have to start it in 2nd sometimes, trust me!
-Im glad I got a winter beater this yr, got me an 1995 Ford Escort.....I feel better driving this in the elements than the Stang! Good LUck!

Get a good set ofwinter tires and you won't have a problem. In fact, withwinter tires on,theMustang will perform better than any front drive or AWDvehicle without snow tires.

I live in Bavaria, Germanyright now and snow gets pretty thick over here. I am running Hankook Icebear 235/55 tires for when I have to drive in the snow and they have worked great. I have 4.10s as well, and I have not had any major issue with traction. Just gotta know when and how hard to apply throttle.

I live near Indy also and I agree with most above. I you drive wisely you will be fine. The TCS does the job and tells you when you are pushing it.

The link above if from someone in CO who made a video of driving the Stang on the snow. Not bad. I guess.

I must be a doufus then. I live in Edmonton,Alberta Canada, and I have only driven my car about 10 times since it snowed and turned cold in mid October. When the main streets are almost devoid of snow I may drive it to work but if it snows or anything colder than -10 deg celcius happens I dont drive the stang. I dont think these cars ( gts stangs ) are meant for real winters. Maybe part of my problem is that my other car is a Murano AWD and that I dont have enough time to adapt when switching cars.
By the way I hate driving my convertible with the top up, mainly due to crappy visibility. One more thing...another 2 good reasons for NOT driving your nice new stang in winter is: someone else may slam into you and the salt on the roads isnt doin your car any favours.
