I drovea Charger R/T this weekend and it has awesomw handling. What can I do to improve the handling on my stang? It was raining and I floored it and it stuck to the road and anyone knows that if you do that in the stang you are going to spin. Also how do you clean the air filter in the CDC shaker hood system.

Dump a load a of sand bags in the trunk and make it weight as 4,000 lbs and you will get the poor handling of a Charger R/T

 

A Charger with awesome handling...thats a new one. I suppose we'll see them tearing up the tracks any day now. Sorry - just having a little fun.

I would never consider a car to have awesome handling simply because the rear end doesn't move around. Like Jason said, its probably due to the extreme weight and perhaps the car had big sticky meats that are good in the rain.

The stock GT handling is pretty darn good. In the hands of a good driver it can go very fast thru the corners. Can it be made even better? Sure - the starting point is a good set of shocks and struts - Tokico D-Specs or Koni Sports.

 

Hey guys, are you forgetting rubber also as a starting point? The stock tires are mediocre to fair at best. I replaced my stock BFG KDWS with wider Goodyear Eagle F1 allseasons and the difference was like night and day.

I'll second the shocks and struts, as I'm considering the Tokico D-Specsand Koni Sports.

 

Conventional wisdom for improving handling performance at auto-X is:

(1) driver improvement, through seat time/experience and/or performance driving instruction
(2) tires and wheels
(3) everything else

That's at least reasonably applicable to your normal street driving, with the additional thought that for the S197, shocks and struts lie at the very top of (3).

It's not entirely clear just what driving/handling aspect the OP is talking about.

If it's about straight line traction it could be something like the Charger having a more aggressive traction control algorithm. A less tolerant "nanny", if you will, and more likely to intervene when you don't really need or want it to.

Not to pick on the OP, but handling described as "awesome" by some can easily be considered terrible/sluggish/unwilling/unresponsive to others, and that comes back to what you want out of a car. Something dead-nuts easy to drive that does nothing all that badly (bland?) or something that drives with more precision that demands more from the driver?
