Default tire/wheel size - 9" wheel, largest tire?

real simple.... what is the widest reasonable tire to put on a 9" wheel? 275 too wide or skinny?

car is not a DD, but is driven fairly hard when its taken out, never taken to the strip though (yet). am looking for the staggered look.

help greatly apreciated! thanks

I believe 275 is the widest you can go.

You should g to www.tirerack.com, shop by Brand, pick the tires you are thinking of and then click on "SPECS". It will then show you for each size what the recommended rim widths are for each size.

Under cornering loads, all tires will distort and deflect laterally (sideways). 275/40's on 9" wide rims will deflect more than 275/40's on 10" wide wheels, and you might even be able to make out a slightly "softer" feel to the response on the 9" rims vs 10" in back to back driving with the two different sets.

Dragstrip activity is somewhat less sensitive to wheel width vs tire size, since there is not much lateral load happening (hopefully, anyway). But the combination of low inflation pressures and wide tires/narrow wheels can adversely affect directional stability at the big end.

It's recomended to go no larger then a 275. The 275 look great on a 9" wheel and give you the maximum amount of traction.
