Default 275's too wide for my stock 17 inch wheels?

I got a buddy who wants to sell me almost new 275 width tires and was thinking about sticking them on the rear 17 inch wheels. Would they be too wide for the stock rim?

I ran 275/40/17 on my fox body with 17x8" wheels. Its not recommended to go that large on a 17x8" rim, but it works. The tires will hang over the rim about an inch on each side.

It depends on the tires. People have run the M&H and MT drag radials on the stock rims with no problems. I wouldn't go wider than 255 for a street tire.

I have them on my rear (275/40/17) and it works. I don't know if it is considered "appropriate", but it hasn't given me any trouble in 3000 miles.

It's not recommended. 255's are as wide as what's typically recommended for the 8" wide wheel. Check the tire manufacturer's specs for that tire and see what THEY recommend.

Just because someone else jumps off the bridge doesn't mean you should too.

what series are you talking about because that makes a difference . 40 no go vs 55 yes..
but 40 or 55 are different than stock diameter . I only looked at tire rack and they did not have any 50 series listed . That would be closer to stock height . as far as the width maybe if you can even find 275/50/17s

I ran 275/50R17 Nitto NT450 tires on the back with stock 17x8" Bullitts -

That's a 28" diameter tire btw. Falken also makes a 275/50R17 size tire. There are not alot of choices in this size but it fills out the wheelwell nicely.
