I just ordered some Goodyear F1 GS-D3 in the size. Got a GREAT deal off Ebay....and now realize I haven't seen any other car with that size. They'll be going on stock polished Bullitts.

I'd love some pics if someone has 'em....

Well, BB.... The Stock Ford 18" Polished Bullit Rims are 8 1/2 " wide.
While possible, I think you are pushing it a little with the 275's on these rims.
So, I'm not sure if it would be all that popular here..

 

Apparently the 275/45-18 GS-D3 EMT is approved for fit on 18 x 8.5, so you're OK as far as this is concerned (but just barely).

It's also a run-flat tire (275/45-18 is not available otherwise according to Tire Rack's information), so it's likely to be non-repairable if you do get a flat, a little heavier, and not ride quite as well as a regular GS-D3 if that matters.

I've got 275/40/18's... not 275/45/18's. Don't know how much taller the tire will be.

 

Everyone in the S197 section likes to preach how 275's are too wide for stock wheels, even 8.5's.

Probably 85% of the guys in the new edge section PREFER 275/40's on their stock 8 inch wide 17's. Including me when I had my new edge, those 275's fit perfect on the stock 17x8 Bullitts.

I'm not at all worried about fitment, they will fit.

 

It really depends on the profile. Taller profiles will tolerate being mounted on narrow wheels better because there is more sidewall height to accommodate it and because the profile of the sidewalls themselves is more rounded. A truck 275/70-17 is actually OK all the way down to 7" wide wheels.

275/40's on 8" wheels is well below the 9" minimum for that size. Mostly, I think people do that mainly for "tire size bragging rights" or other appearance-based reasons. This isn't just a Mustang thing, or a 275-wide thing - it's just as bad on other forums with that and other sizes.

No flame intended, but no amount of discussion along those lines of thought is going to change the engineering behind fitting tires to wheels of adequate width. Bending the guidelines a bit for extremely short durations is one thing, running them that way for extended periods of time is quite a different story.

I agree w/ Norm on this one.

In order to really benefit from 275s and wider, you need to be putting down some serious power. Otherwise you're just adding weight, and understeer. Sure wide wheels look cooler, but they cost more and can have negative effects on performance. With a sticky set of 255s and some lca's with polybushings, gripping with 300rwhp shouldn't be an issue.

 

Well, you guys are telling me what is recommended, I am telling you what fits and works. The 275/40's on my 17x8 wheels on my new edge fit, drove, looked and hooked well.

Will these 275s that I just ordered work any better than 255s, probably not. The extra weight may even slow me down a tad...that doesn't keep guys from putting 20's on their cars. They are going to be a much higher quality tire than the stock 235's that are on the car now, and I got them for basically half the price of retail.

 

Hey man if you're getting a good deal and you're happy with them, that's all that matters. I have 20s myself, so it's not like shaving weight is my number 1 goal.
