Default 17x9 Rims - watch out!

I was autocrossing a few weekends ago, and a grinding noise started up in the rear of the car on hard left turns. After I got the car home, I found this...

Left side - looks good

Right side - not so good

Note the nice groove in the rim and close proximity of the rectangular metal plate which acts as a washer for the sway bar bracket nuts. The bracket likely shifted, or I didn't get it on right the last time I was working in that area. The gap on the right side between the plate and rim on the right side is about 1/4" and I'll speculate the rim deflected enough to make contact....

I managed to fix the situation by ordering a new set of 18x9.5" rims from Sam Strano, and a new set of 285/30/18 V710's from tire rack (older tires $233).

That sucks. I lucked out when I was on 17's, as my stick-on wheel weights hit during the slightest cornering and made a rythmic clicking noise. A few minutes on each side with an angle grinder did the trick. It's somewhat of a known issue--I'm pretty sure I've posted on it, and others definitely have (maybe other forums??).

Damn! Glad you got it worked out.

Those are some SHORT @$$ed new tires! I guess that's for ESP?
