Default New part # (strut-to-wheel spindle bolts and nuts)

For those of you who are planning on changing your front struts or springs and order new one time use only bolts/nuts. Be advised that the strut-to-spindle bolts and nuts part numbers have changed. Do not go by the Ford service manual. After having some problems of my own getting the correct parts I found the following on another Mustang site...

There was a thread a while back about a broken spindle and it was said that it most likely came from the strut-to-spindle bolts loosening. This had been confirmed by another source as well. Another source that I talked to (a local racing team that runs the FR500C and FR500S Mustangs) said that they had been advised by Ford to upgrade to these as well to ensure no issues.

Here are the upgraded part numbers:

W714652-S439 (bolts) & W714653-S900 (nuts)

The old part numbers:

W709870-S439 (bolts) & W711091-S900 (nuts)

The new bolts are fine thread versus the coarse thread on the old ones.

Torque spec on the new ones is 166 ft lb versus 148 ft lb.

Ford did this as a running change along with some other modifications to the spindle machining.

Great, now I'll go and secure the loan to purchase them.

The new numbers were considerably cheaper than the old numbers - it hurt but so does having a failure

I'm not sure when the production change was made.

What did you torque your bolts up to and how did you decide to use that torque setting?

Can you see the bolt threads well enough to determine if they are fine or course?

FYI - they are defined by Ford as one-time-only use fasteners but you are not the first person to reuse them

According to an article in the Oct 2010 issue of 5.0, the new fasteners went into production cars midway through the '09 Model Year.

I dont remember what I tq'ed them to, I did them last year. When I did a search on the tq settings,I remember it was a lot. I want to say I tq'ed them to 150 ftlbs?

I drove the car a summer like that. Anything I should watch out for if they are 1 time reused fasteners?

The old fasteners are torqued to 148 ft-lbs. The new fasteners are torqued to 166 ft-lbs. There have been quite a few people who have re-used the old bolts/nuts and say they haven't had any problems. I went ahead and ordered new hardware (for my own peace of mind) and in the process found out that Ford updated the front strut bolts/nuts and the parts numbers in the service manual aren't valid anymore.

I also read around various forums if you rally or drag race your car you'll want to replace the bolts with new ones. If you've been running for awhile without any problems then I wouldn't worry about it. Maybe next time you have you front tires off check the torque on the bolts?

I replaced all the suspension fasteners when I lowered my car ... used the course thread strut/spindle fasteners. I'll get the fine-thread fasteners when I eventually replace the OEM struts. I have this puppy to apply the proper 166 lb-ft of torque ... the torque wrench on top goes up to 250 lb-ft.
