wheel suggestions
I'm thinking of maybe finnaly upgrading the rims/tires on my car
currently its just the stock 17"s and I don't want to go to to large of a rim but it does look like I'd need to go to 18
I was thinking 18x8 front and 18x10/10.5 back with 255 front and 285 back
the problem I seem to be running into on looking is there aren't many 18x10's (or I'm failing at searching)
I'm planning on a gear swap at some point but dicided I should upgrade the tires first to get better grip

To run 255 width tires, you'll likely need 9" wide wheels. So you should be looking for 18x9 front, 18x10 rear.
That's a pretty popular staggering size - have you checked the usual vendors (AM, Late Model Resto, Cruizin, Steeda) for possible wheel and tire packages? I would even call Tire Rack as their techs are really helpful in finding the right sizes and offsets.
Also, what are your priorities for the new wheels? Light weight? Low cost? Looks? Handling?

18x9 sounds fine
my priorities are
good price
better grip on the occasion that I floor it
light weight would be good so long as its still sturdy
looks well my preferance in looks lis a bit mild (I'd like black and it would be nice to have a black edge but not a real "busy" look)
If I find one that I really want but the cost is up there then I'll just wait till I can afford them

Good price / lightweight: Check out Enkei wheels. Also, supposedly the TSW Nurburgrings (they look like the RTR wheels) weigh about 20lbs in 18x9.5, which is great for an affordable wheel. Unforunately, there is a major lack of affordable lightweight wheels in the market place.
Grip: I'd go with a non-staggered setup in this case. Something like 18x9.5 or 18x10 on all corners using 275 or 285 tires. The primary reason is that if you stagger, you will have less maximum grip on the front versus more grip in the rear. That means the front tires will push before the rear tires reaches their limits. In my opinion, staggering is really only a good option if you're putting down ridiculous amounts of power and can't stuff a ~315 width tire in the front. The challenge is finding wheel sizes and offsets that will fit front and rear without rubbing or sticking out too much.

right now if I turn off TCS and floor it then it spins the tires for a bit then breaks em loose a little when it hits 2nd and chirps at third and 4th I don't know as I normally start running out of open road by then
for the grip part I'm more of looking for rear grip for when I floor it so the rears get more power to the ground and less wasted on spinning and chirping
I had said 18x8 originally as that was what the tire rack was suggesting for the front

If you like the wheels, sounds like a set of gt500 takeoffs would be a good bet for you. You can find them on ebay for less than a grand with tps ready to mount.
