Sounds like you've got an automatic and that the tune is a wee bit TOO aggressive. What you need before lots more tire width is a grippier tread compound than things with 400-ish treadwear have. And if grippier and wider tires aren't enough, you'll need to either modify your driving style slightly or dial a little of the aggressiveness out of the shift programming.

I had said 18x8 originally as that was what the tire rack was suggesting for the front
If you poke around through the wheel section at TR, you'll find that TR has a much wider variety of 8" wide wheels than anything else in 18", never mind the fact that Ford's own 18" GT wheels were already 8.5" wide. IOW, TR is playing mostly to the appearance-oriented audience upgrading from 16's and 17's, with less regard to getting the best performance out of the various 18" tire sizes.

I would never run a 255/45 tire on anything narrower than 9" myself, or suggest to anybody else that they fit that to anything narrower than 8.5". Supposedly, 8" is wide enough, but down that narrow you aren't going to develop the tire's full grip and you will be somewhat more likely to encounter some rather unusual tread wear patterns. Just doesn't seem worth it even if performance isn't all that important.

I have 275's all around with stock suspension and don't rub. However, the 275's up front DO cause some serious tramlining on heavily truck-rutted roads. If I had to do it again, I'd have 255's up front.

good point
I'll definitely go for atleast 18x9 on the front

I don't have an issue with skipping the tires as thats only if I floor ir from lower speeds (ie if I'm already doing 60 or so its not noticeable)

I noticed the Torq-Thrust M wheels on the tirerack which has 18x9 and 18x10 available
do you think those widths would work well?

If you want to stagger, those sizes are the ticket! 9" is perfect for a 255/45/18 up front and then you have a variety of choices out back with a 10" rim. 285/40/18 is the standard, but you could also choose a 275/40/18 or my preference 295/45/18
If the torq's get your goat, you might save some money and go with bullits from AM or OEwheels. Mine came from AM and I have been very happy with them to date.

well the have the sizes
it would be nice if the lip was black too
and it would be nice if they were lighter

but the more important part is they fit the tires and are good for daily driving
