Default need new brakes

Im looking for new brakes but dont want to spend 3k for them. Im considering the shelby stock brembos or the baer gt kit. They cost about about the same ($1250). Which ones are better? The baer come with slotted rotors which add to the overall look of the stang.

Does his make a big difference?

Why do you want new brakes?

What problems are you experiencing that you expect the new brakes to solve?

I can't speak for phatcat...but I want something that looks cool behind my new wheels!

I wish there was an option for around $600.

I mostly want somethig that looks good, but also want it functional. If i get the brembo shelbys and compromise the slotted rotors, thats fine if they are better at braking. If i go with the slotted baers i would also buy the slotted rear rotors to match the front. The brembos are four pistons vs the baer two pistons , how much of a difference is that going to make? I couldnt find any threads that talk about the baers either to get additional input.

Sleeper hit it on the money.

However, in my honest opinion, the stock brakes on the S197s do remarkably well as long as you upgrade to a set of pads reflective of the environment you're driving in. The only reason for me to recommend upgrading anything but pads is if someone is consistently driving at high speeds and needs to stop on a dime...and those are usually track guys. Just my opinion.

Well, the Brembo brake kits certainly look good, but the better functioning is pretty vague. The Brembo kits are not going to make you stop quicker. If you step on your brake pedal and the ABS kicks in, your brakes are more than capable of locking the tires up. That means your tires are going to be the limiting factor to your stopping distance. The primary advantage of Brembo or other aftermarket brake kits are going to be in the feel of the pedal due to the fixed caliper, better thermal capacity for repeated hard braking (not really noticeable on the street without absolutely abusing the stock brake system) and lastly the ability to quickly swap brake pads. I doubt you'll notice much more than just the better feel of the brake pedal without some seriously grippy tires.

I think you could accomplish the same objectives by better pads, fluids and stainless steel lines. The looks issue could be resolved with a set of caliper covers or painting the stock ones. Pads, Fluid, Brake Lines, and the covers are a heck of a lot cheaper.

Like the others said - its the tires that stop the car, not the brakes. The limiting factors for street use are NOT the stock calipers - its the pads and tires.

You can't find much on Baer because they aren't used extensively on Mustangs. Brembos on the other hand are very common and by and large the folks who have them love em. Of the few folks I know who have the Baers I would say they are not all that happy with them when used in race conditions. The main problem seems to be crappy rotors. But for street use they would be fine. So take your pick.

I'm one of those who loves the Brembo's for track use. I also run front brake cooling to make them even more effective. The rotors are not drilled or slotted and that is my preference for track use. Lot's of pad choices. The rears are stock calipers with the same pad material Carbotech XP10. Yes the rears look "funny" inside my 18 inch wheels but that doesn't bother me as looking "funny" does not affect lap times.

With any BBK you need to make sure that your wheels will clear the larger calipers and rotors.
