How to tell if its A Real Saleen & Whats It Worth??
For collection purposes there are allot better ones out there.
Hey everyone,
There is a supposed Saleen that has came up for sale locally here that I am interested in and I have already contacted Saleen about it and they say that it is an authentic saleen, but would not give me any more info on the car. I was wondering if anyone could give me what it was optioned with, etc.
I think I messed up a digit in the middle of the vin when I was writing it down, but the production number is correct. The vin I have is
1fabp41e7xk214988
and the ID is
89-491
Any other info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

The only comments were-
3:55 rear, dash nameplate
Thanks for looking that up for me.
Can you give me your opinion on purchasing one of these that the engine and transmission have been 'upgraded'. Since it is a real Saleen and everything seems intact (aside from engine and transmission), would it be worth $10k?
Thanks.

Do you have photos?
I have one photo, but it only shows a side shot. The guy claims he put a 306 bottom end in with better cam, etc, replaced the transmission with a WC T5, new K member, and taller rear end gear (3.73 I think he said), but he did not mention if the interior was stock and complete.
Here is the only pic I have, sorry about how large it is.

Here's where we will start:
First ask and see if the vehicle been repainted. Should be easy. One thing I do notice is, the upper Ford body line stripe is not present. Most Saleens had this feature from Ford. It ran along the body crease above the door handles.
Next, see if all the Ford body panel VIN tags are present. From 1987-1998 Ford stuck tamper proof decals printed with the vehicle's VIN on all the body panels. Quarters, doors, fenders, hood, trunk and bumper covers.
With that, the next thing you'll want to check for is rust. Fox cars do rust. Check the hatch lid, door bottoms, firewall, aprons, floors. Anyplace that has a drain hole or area that can trap moisture. Even the area directly under the plastic vent grill behind the hood can rust. Also, inspect the areas behind the body kit.
Fox cars are thin. Check the floors, seat area, suspension pick-up points, shock towers and firewall for stress cracks.
If you're looking for originality, the interior could be a make-or-break item. The exact seat material is not reproduced while the shift **** can be an expensive item to purchase. Parts like the Momo wheel, Ford logo horn button, door panel inserts, and correct stereo can be found in good used condition through the Saleen Hobby and networks. Non-exact replacement parts can also be purchased.
The seat frames and foam can still be serviced through FloFit.
If the car is solid, with a clean title and no evidence of being damaged... $8,000-$8,500 could be a fair offer. I think. I would also ask for the original K-member to be included with the sale.
It's tough to say this vehicle is worth $10,000.... because once you start to hit the $10,000-$13,000 area... you can attain a completely different collector level of Saleen Mustang from this era.
Some of this depends on what you want to do with the car and what you future goals are.
