Bent Housing
I'll throw my two cents in...
I think that one of the reasons they advise against using the pumpkin is because the car cantilt from one side to the other with the jack under the center and possibly slip off the jack. I know I've accidentallyleaned on the car while standing up and felt the car move a bit, never enough to fall off though. Ford doesn't want to get sued.
That said, I've always used the pumpkin as a jack pointon RWD cars and have never had a problem and never heard about one.

For those interested...
At the shop today, I took pictures of a 9" differential out of it's housing, with the axles stuffed in it.
It belongs to my 68 Fastback.
The picture show that those two axles have about an inch and a half play radius at each end.
They don't make a straight line, because gravity is at play here.
The housing is not there to hold them straight.
So, one would have to bend the housing more than 3/4 (half the radius), before you, in turn, start to bend the axles.
I'm sorry, but that would be a hell of a visual
... Not to mention the uneaven tire wear.
So, bending a solid axle, wouldn't go un-noticed

It's threads like this that make me realize how many non-mechanical "experts" we have. If you don't know, don't give advise cause it sounds good, you just give wrong information to people who want to really know.
Thanks to Pascal for explaining this so now people can understand how not realistic all this damage is from a jack. The guy hit something, end of story.
BTW- I just read this whole thread cause some of these "experts" made me laugh.
