Lifter Knock or Worse?

Lifter Knock or Worse?
Hello,
I have a 82 Mustang GT with a 4-spd. It has about 120K on it. Since I bought it in October '07 I haven't had much chance to drive it. As it was originally an Arizona car, it needed the oil pan gasket, rear main seal, front crank seal and valve cover gaskets replaced due to drying out. At the advice of my mechanic, I also had the timing chain replaced with a Ford Racing double roller. This is where my real problems started.
After tightening up the timing and the rest of the engine, it developed what my mechanic called a lifter tick. What it sounded to me was like a jackhammer under the hood. He thinks that when he put in the timing chain, and tightened up the timing (apparently the distributor was a cog off and engine was generally out of time), that this let a worn or broken lifter loose to be an obvious problem. His suggestion is to pull the intake off and inspect the lifters and possibly replace. He's been suggesting I just replace the engine, but that is out of my means right now, so I'd like to try his fix.
That all being said, does that sound like it makes sense? Thanks in advance for your input![/align]

RE: Lifter Knock or Worse?
how does it run/drive? how old/experienced is the mekanik? sounds like he got timing off and valves are hittting the pistons? if oil psi and compression are good; no reason to swap motor? id redo timing, add new cam and lifters 1 or 2 steps up and add 4 barrel, intake and longtubes w/duals. car will be night and day faster/better running. 82's are light!
