Question Speed Density vs. Mass Air????

So I am in the market for a used 5.0 Fox. I will hopefully have one by or before next spring/summer time. I am trying to gain as much knowledge as I can before I make the purchase. Basically what I want to know the main difference between the two. Do speed density engines basically have a carburetor? And the Mass Air ones are fuel injected? Because I am looking into an 86' 5.0 and I read that this is the first year that they went to the electronic fuel injection engine. So does this mean that the V8 is a Mass Air?? I am just a bit confused. If someone could help me out that would be great!

Thanks

Differences in technology, really. Both are good as I actually have Speed Density in my car (and with these cars stock, they come fuel injected like the 1987's and 88's) ...

Nothing wrong with them, but Mass Air makes it much easier to tune things quickly and efficiently. For my stuff I'm probably going to have to have the computer reworked and unless you have someone who can do that, it's usually better to go with mass air if you ask me.

I would say either go with Mass Air, or go Carbureted. Fuel injected = Speed Density or Mass Air; Carbureted = Carburetor

So you kinda lost me at the end, lol. What would the 1986 stock V8 be then? Is that a speed density then? Because it was a fuel injected?

if you want to add a SC, cam or any real performance power adder, you'll need to convert the SD to mass-air ...not a difficult process...air meter, computer & wiring...

mass-air calculates the amount of air coming in, SD assumes the amount of air....with SD you could convert to DFI, but the a whole different animal...

Ok so timspony..........the converting to a mass-air is not too difficult like you say, but how expensive would that be?

And does anyone know if the 1986 302 V8 is a speed density then? I would imagine.

ok let me just say

sd cars can handle h/c/i swaps

they like nitrous

ive seen them with kenne bells and seen them with vortechs (6psi w. both)

basically, you have to be careful w.cam choice. need to know a few things, and know what to work and tweek and you can have a strong running SD car

the 86 was a sd car. they look great, but the 86's have **** heads and flat top pistons.

Thanks dimebag for your help. Does it seem to be an easier process to just convert it to mass air? Because I don't foresee using nitrous ever......I just want to supercharge it eventually and for it to be reliable.

By the way , since I am use to just modding the S197's........when doing the convert to mass air...........or just adding a new intake, do you have to re-flash anything? Like you would on the newer mustangs?

Mass-air conversion = new computer (A9L) w/5 speed, mass-air meter, harness wire and a few hours of time to install......

visit mustangsunlimited or any other mustang vendor that sells the conversion kit...
