True flattops were only available OEM in 1986. 1985 Manual transmission = HR, 1985 Auto Transmission = Hyd. flat tappet.

I've seen 85 Mustangs with True Flat top pistons. Not sure what month they were made but the cars were titled as 85. Not everything was changed the moment they changed the model year. Many times the engine could be dated 2 months before the car was assembled. I didn't know what trans was in the car thus the reason I asked. You should spend more time on intake reaserch than disecting my post.

True flattops (not the dished cast Al pistons w/out relieves) were matched with E6 heads for the Mustang, that (the cylinder heads) was the reason for their specification/use by Ford in 1986.

Regarding "dissecting your post"...... no need to "dissect" anything as long as its correct.....

Lastly........ looks like you're taking the last two syllables of your user name way too literally ...

Youre reading to much internet information and not spending enough time actually under the hood. I've seen at least 10 Hyd cammed smooth flat top piston engines in 1985 model cars. I've seen a lot of stuff that was never listed in a book, on the internet but there nonetheless. Maybe a little more hands on experiance you would know that.

........Internet?...more hands on?.... I got to have some time to go to the bathroom...... you can use that "hands on" expression as an excuse for providing the wrong information with anybody, but me. Here's the fact..... true flattops, as in not a flat dished piston w/out relieves, like the ones found in Crown Victoria's, Town Cars, etc...... were 1986 Mustang specific. Have I done a few over a couple of decades .......... continue assuming, it's your right.

Providing you have valve notches in the pistons I would go with the XE270HR Comp cam part # 35-351-8 It will work well with your GT40 heads, stealth intake and 670 carb
