Default Evaluate this idea..

First i have a 302 with a 650 cfm Edelbrock Carb

I think my motor is running rich because...
-There is a smell of gas.
-I get a white smoke from the pipes only when i sit at an idle.
-The smoke does not give me the appearance of coolant or oil really.
-The tailpipes have what seems like quite a bit of carbon build up.
-My plugs appeared to have a dark liquid carbon build up on them.

To fix this I need to...
-Get a vacuum gauge and hook it up to the carb.
-Turn down the tuning screws (sorry don't know the term.)
-Unscrew them until I get a higher vacuum and stop when the vacuum drops again.

Is this all sounding right? what is your guys opinions? I feel I could have a bad seal in the motor and oil could be getting in but its not constant. I also feel it could be the valve stem seals but once again it only smokes on the idle.

Thanks in advance guys.

I think it's an oil issue... Although if the carb is rich it will burn white smoke.... I notice on mine (I got a Edelbrock 600) when I floor it when it startes off cold, it blows white smoke. I smell gas on mine too, does it do it when it startes up? If so it's normal, 302's burn a little oil.

Put new plugs in,take it down the street, make a wide open throttle pass, and shut it off....pull plugs and take a pic and post.....That will better help us determine if its a carb problem,or maybe a water problem.
