Default gusher

I ran this thing out of gas after installing a kit on the carb (2bbl). I finally got it started once I primed it...then fuel started gushing out of the two 1/4" tubes that stick up between the float chamber and tha choke housing. I put a new float and valve...it didnt do this till I ran it out of gas. Before installing the new float, gas would gush out of the overflow hole above the float. Now its squirting all over the bottom of the hood. What gives. Anybody know what caliber weapon it takes to put a 1965 289 out of My Misery?
