launching?
if you rear tires can stick good here is what you do.
put your foot firmly on the brake, while the car is in neutral. rev it to 2000 while pressing on the brake pedal. you should feel it going further to the floor. (due to vacuum)
put it in drive and slowly give it gas until you feel the tires start to spin. back off the gas until they stop.
hammer the gas and release the brake at the same time.
this works alot better with an aftermarket converter since you can launch at much higher rpms.

I thought revving it and then putting it into drive is bad for the tranny?

it is. you wait for the revs to come down before you put it back in drive. revving it is for the sole purpose of getting the brakes further to the floor.
I don't see you having time to do this when you are staged and the other person is staged on a track, but it really does work. I suppose for the street it would work though. I tried revving it in neutral today while applying the brake and the brake pedal actually went to the floor quite a bit more, so yes it does work. Otherwise, preload it to what the converter will allow without moving the tires, and when the time is right mash the gas as you quickly let off the brake.
