well i know that the STI doesn't get as much turbo lag because of the top mount intercooler where is the evo has a front mount intercooler so it has a little more lag. I've heard if you front mount the intercooler you get a little more hp, but your torque will lag behind.
the length of intake piping has actually very little affect on spool up. shorter is better but it does not matter as much as most people think it does. this is why sts turbo systems (turbo(s) at the very back of the car) still have full boost around 3k. turbo lag is caused by an improperly sized/matched/setup system

mustang mafia it depends on what you plan to do

If you are talking mods vs mods, then there is no question. The LS1 takes to mods pretty much better than almost any other car. When your working with more cubic inches the power gains are exponentially more with every mod. Just look at my sig and the very short list of performance mods i have and the power i made with them. 329rwhp(sae)/341rwtq(sae) from a lid, filter, ported/polished throttlebody, and a cut-out(or cat-back if you prefer not to use cut-out), and thats it for performance parts. Total cost in performance for the car is under $1000.00. But if your really wanting performance cheap and great gains from mods then you need to look into a 03/04 Cobra.

Depends on what year EVO you are talking about.

2003/2004 EVO VIII vs. 2004 STi (2004 STi is faster)
2005 EVO VIII/MR vs. 2005 STi (About Even)
2006 EVO IX/MR vs. 2006 STI (2006 EVO IX/MR is faster)

EVO IXs have trapped anywhere from 105-106mph stock, most trap 103-104mph though depending on conditions. The IXs also are putting down 255-280WHP down stock (depending on conditions and octane rating of pump gas).

Thanks for the input guys.

I am trying to decide whether I want an STI or an LS1.... Which do you think would take better to mods???
Pay no attention to the misinformed statements above, the EVO IX is the answer, it also runs 11s with bolt ons/stock turbo/pump gas, an achievement a STI could only dream of.

I dunno what the deal was, but back when my car was full boltons/cams, 280 RWHP/290 RWTQ, I ran into a new evo on the highway.

I dunno if the guy simply could not drive, but I just destroyed him. The first run was from like a 70~ roll (highway crusin) and I was acutally able to walk him, let out, and then walk him again as he never let off the gas.

From a low roll (like 10 MPH) I still put it on him really hard. I can see his driving skills coming into play on this race, but on the 70 MPH one all he had to do was leave it in gear and stomp it.

I definatly was not able to toy with that STI on my video like I was the EVO. I needed to be running the car pretty hard to get away from the STI.

My buddies EVO, when it was only making 35x'ish awhp (Mustang dyno) ran all over my car from a roll....from a dig, it was different. Of course, I was only making 305rwhp with the 3600 stall....he now makes 45x awhp on a Mustang dyno and he traps slower than me when I'm on motor

Fuggin AWD...who needs it?

The EVO IX is most definitely NOT the answer if you're looking for a car purely for the drag strip. I've obviously had nothing bad to say about EVOs this whole thread, but you've got to be smoking drugs to think that the EVO is a better strip car. If you want a strip setup, it is SO much easier and cheaper to get a good V8 like the LS1 or a Cobra into the 11s, and then on into the 10s and 9s.

ok.........im staying out this convo/argument, but, if youre comparing EVO vs LS1.....apples n oranges dude.............should be EVO vs STi and LS1 vs Cobra.........first one, id say EVO........granted, i like the STi looks better, but, the EVO's handle better, and thats why i would get an awd car.........now, LS1 vs Cobra........Cobra, yes, "special edition", 390hp underrated, also, looking at the cheapest @ $25k probably.....u could get an LS1 SS, for probably almost half that, with a lil less hp, still underrated also(according to the Camaro guys here), still have rwd, and TORQUE, and have a fast car. idk......tough decision in all honesty....at least for me. BUT, with the SS/Cobra, youd have "the sound".

I thought this thread was about EVO vs. STi/STI? Well I agree with you, if you want a setup purely for drag racing, the better platform in the end would be an LS1, but getting the EVO into the 11s is just as easy and cheaper, if not easier and cheaper than an LS1. Sh*t bolt ons=11s in the IX, that's pretty cheap and easy in my opinion. But pure drag car, LS1 or even a Cobra is a better route, but that's not to say that turning the EVO into a drag car or running 10s and 9s isn't possible, it very possible, and compared to a lot of other imports, it's very easy. You also get the bonus of all around performance and AWD traction. So it depends on what a person is more interested in.
